February and March can be brutally cold for parts of the country, but sometimes people pay less attention to heating safety toward the end of the heating season. In reality, it doesn’t matter if spring’s right around the corner. Any time that you use the heater you should pay close attention to heating safety.
Here are some tips to keep your family safe until from carbon monoxide and fires until winter is far behind.
- Install fire detectors – Fire detectors are simple, life-saving devices that every home should have. You should aim to have one in every room and in each hallway, especially near sleeping areas. You should also check the batteries several times throughout the heating season.
- Install carbon monoxide detectors – You can’t see or smell carbon monoxide, but it is a deadly hazard to your family. Carbon monoxide detectors can alert your family to the presence of carbon monoxide at low levels so you can take immediate action. If you already have them, check their batteries several times throughout the heating season.
- Buy fire extinguishers – Every home should have a few fire extinguishers, preferably the ultra-versatile ABC style. If you happen to have these in your home already, check them to make sure they are still fully functional. You should also make sure everyone knows where they are and how to use them.
- Make a plan – Talk with every member of your family about fire safety and what you should do in case of an emergency. This is especially important if you have small children, elderly family members, and pets.
