By the time fall’s arrived, most people are more than ready for the cooler days and chilly nights. Soon enough though we’ll be facing winter, and that means we will be turning up the thermostat to fight off the sub-zero temperatures outside.
Every year we hear tragic stories of house fires and carbon monoxide deaths that, with a little extra precaution, could have been prevented. So, before the heating season is upon us, we want to encourage everyone to take the following safety measures.
- Fireplace safety – If you use a fireplace in the winter, it’s important to have it cleaned and inspected. Hire a professional that can check the safety of your fireplace inside and out, as well as clean it.
- Install fire detectors – You should make sure that your home has enough fire detectors. Aim for one in every room and in each hall, especially near sleeping areas. If you have fire detectors, check their batteries several times throughout the heating season.
- Install carbon monoxide detectors – You can’t see or smell carbon monoxide, but it is a deadly hazard to your family. These life-saving devices will alert your family to the presence of carbon monoxide at low levels so you can take immediate action. If you already have them, check their batteries several times throughout the heating season.
- Buy fire extinguishers – Every home should have a few fire extinguishers, preferably the ultra-versatile ABC style. If you happen to have these in your home already, check them to make sure they are still fully functional.
- Plan ahead – Talk with every member of your family about fire safety and what you should do in case of an emergency. This is especially important if you have small children, elderly family members, and pets.
