When you notice that your pipes begin to back up, it can be easy to panic. It is not an easy sight to turn your shower on and notice that the water isn’t flowing down. It’s very common to run to your local store and grab a bottle of “self-plumber” filled with who-knows-what and hoping that it will be an easy fix. However, the chemicals found in drain cleaners are harmful to your pipes. There is a better way.
If you want to tackle a clogged drain before calling a local expert, there are a couple of alternatives to drain cleaners that are much safer for your pipes and your health. A good option would be a snake or auger. This tool is a good method of breaking up whatever is clogging your pipes. Typically, this tool features a thick wire that runs through the pipe while you are holding onto a handle that rotates the snake within the pipe. The snake will hook onto the clog and you will be able to pull out and discard the mess. For small clogs, a cup plunger will do the trick. A cup plunger can create proper suction that helps remove clogs from pipes. By placing the plunger over the drain and moving it up and down, your pipes will be clear in no time.
Finally, knowing what to keep out of your pipes can be the difference between taking that good shower or realizing you have a big problem on your hands. Things to keep out of the drain include grease, eggshells, starchy foods, bones, stringy foods, coffee grounds, and paper towels. All of these items can cause you stress that you don’t deserve. Keeping your pipes clean as well as knowing how to handle a clog will give your pipes a long, happy life! And of course, for those problems that do not go away easily even with these tips, feel free to give us a call for help!
